The Highest Calling of Christian Women

Being a wife and mother is not my highest calling. Being a wife and mother is not the height of the Christian experience for women.

My highest calling, my deepest joy, my greatest honor in this life is to be a servant of the Most High God. The height of the Christian experience is God Himself. This is the same for every Christian- male or female, single or married, parent or barren.

Jesus said whoever does not hate his father, mother, siblings, children, and life can’t be His disciple (Luke 14:26). He tells us through this hyperbolic comparison that our primary and chief allegiance is to Him.

Our allegiance is not to our families or friends or livelihoods. Those things, while important, should pale in comparison on scales of love and priority. Christ is preeminent.

To insinuate that the height of the Christian experience for women is marriage and children is extremely offensive to the unmarried and/or childless sisters among us. It adds a heavy burden where there is already pain. Regardless of season and circumstance, Christ is the highlight of our lives. He is our joy.

In a classic case of the pendulum swing, some conservative Christians have so vehemently rejected the feminist movement’s undermining of these noble roles, that they have now swung too far the opposite direction and idolized them. Neither is biblical.
